Within the tale of Beowulf itself is reference to another legend, one that influences the titular hero. In Beowulf, the Anglo-Saxon epic of circa 900 AD, we are treated to an abridged version of the German legend of Sigmund. Just be sure you did it better than the original lest you lose face. It was not only okay to borrow one writer’s ideas and expand upon them, but encouraged.
